The Central Electrical Testing laboratory, Kakkalur in Thiruvallur district provides various testing services to enterprises as per their need for testing & certification.
The Central Electrical Testing Laboratory (CETL) was established in the year 1973 to cater to the needs of Micro, Small and Medium Electrical and Electronics Enterprises not only in the state of Tamil Nadu but also to those that are located throughout the country.
CETL, Kakkalur is accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL), a constituent Board of Quality Council of India and CETL is also recognized by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Government of India.
This laboratory offers testing facilities to the entrepreneurs manufacturing electrical products and is equipped to test electrical items, electrical wiring accessories & electrical appliances as per Indian Standard Specifications benefitting Micro, Small and Medium enterprises in India. This laboratory is being strengthened by procuring and installing equipments periodically to maintain the accreditation status.
Samples of electrical products collected from the open market by the designated officers of District Industries Centres are tested in the laboratory in addition to the samples supplied by BIS . The Government of Tamil Nadu has appointed this Laboratory as a quality consultant for the purchase of Electrical goods and appliances by the Government Departments / Quasi - Government Organizations.
The Chemical Testing and Analytical Laboratory, Guindy and the Regional Testing Laboratories at Madurai, Coimbatore, Salem and Thoothukudi provide chemical testing facilities to cater to the needs of MSMEs as well as the Government Departments like PWD, Highways, Railways, police, etc., and private customers for testing their raw materials and products. These laboratories undertake testing of materials such as steel, cement, brick, water, sand, rubber, ores and minerals, lime, bleaching powder, coal, etc., and these facilities are provided at nominal testing charges.
Under the Directorate of Industries and Commerce, Micro Small Medium Enterprises Department, the following Chemical Testing Laboratories were established to cater the needs of MSME Industries in the field of testing.
Chemical Testing and Analytical Laboratory, Chennai, inaugurated by the then Prime Minister, Shri Jawaharlal Nehru was established in the year 1951. It was established to cater to the testing needs of various types of Industriesespecially MSME in the State.
Regional Testing Laboratory, Madurai was established in the year 1971 to cater to the testing needs of the Industries of the Southern Districts of Tamil Nadu like Thanjavur, Dindigul, Trichy, Sivagangai, Virudhunagar, Theni, Ramanathapuram.
In Coimbatore district, there had been a tremendous growth of Industries such as Textiles, Foundries, Pumps, Motors and other allied Industries. The Government felt the necessity of a testing laboratory to cater to the needs of the above Industries. The Government established the Regional Testing Laboratory at Coimbatore in 1976 to cater the testing needs of Industries located in the districts of Coimbatore, Nilgris, Tirupur, Namakkal.
The Regional Testing Laboratory, Salem was initially known as Sago
Research Laboratory, Salem. It was established in the year 1961, based on
the Tariff Commission constituted by the Government of India for the
protection of Sago and Starch Industries in and around Salem district, mainly
to meet the requirements of Starch and Sago Industries by providing testing
facilities.
In the year 1990, this Laboratory was upgraded as Regional Testing
Laboratory in order to facilitate the testing of other Industrial Samples in
addition to Sago and Starch products to cater to the Industrial needs of
districts in and around Salem likeNamakkal,Karur,Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri and
Erode.
The erstwhile Magnesium Carbonate Plant in Tuticorin was converted to State Research Station for Salt and Marine Chemicals in the year 1971 to help the Salt Industry for the development of Salt Products. The State Research Station for Salt and Marine Chemicals was converted into Regional Testing Laboratory in the year 1992, in order to facilitate the testing of other Industrial Samples in addition to Salt and MarineChemical Products to cater to the Industrial needs of districts in and around Thoothukudi likeTirunelveli, Tenkasi, Ramanathapuram, Kanyakumari.
The above laboratories cater to the testing needs of MSME ‘s Major Industries, Central and State Government Departments, Public Sectors, Private Organizations and Individuals. The Chennai Industrial Co-operative Analytical Laboratory Ltd., (MICAL) tests the samples/products of member pharmaceutical units and issues test certificates to them as per the prescribed standards. Apart from the samples submitted by the members, the society also undertakes testing of samples from Non-members, the Customs department and the Government Health departments of various States in India. Besides pharmaceutical products, the society also undertakes testing of food items in accordance with Prevention of Food Adulteration Act. The MICAL’s branch lab at Coonoor has obtained ISO certification. MICAL has earned service charges of Rs.30.47 lakh in the year 2020-21.
