Next to Kerala, Tamil Nadu occupies pride in coir industry in India and in brown fibre sector, Tamil Nadu stands first. To increase the utilisation of husks and more employment, the State Government and Coir Board have implemented various schemes in the State.
Under the control of Department of Industries and Commerce, 64 coir industrial cooperative societies having the activities of fibre extraction, yarn spinning, curled coir manufacturing and rubberised coir products manufacturing are functioning.
Out of these 64 coir societies, 4 Coir marketing societies at regional level have been organized to market the coir products of the primary coir societies. The above 64 coir industrial cooperative societies are functioning with 11103 members and with a share capital of Rs. 279.52 lakhs.
